Absolutely Stunning Hikes That You Will Love

McBride Trail in Rancho Palos Verdes gives you several little hiking trails to choose from once you enter. My glutes and thighs are usually jelly after this journey and I don’t regret it one bit! It is a fairly easy workout if you’re walking. Jogging all the way on the other hand, pushes your body to different level. The 180 degree breathtaking views are spectacular. It’s a great workout activity with slight incline and also a peaceful place to meditate. This route is dedicated to Clifton R. McBride in recognition of his efforts to improve and maintain the public trail on July 27th, 1989.

As you enter, you will find multiple trails that extend and lead to different directions. Challenge yourself and take the “the road less traveled”. I personally enjoy going on this hike because I want to get lost in the wilderness and see where it takes me. If you’re a wandering adventurist too, make sure to put some bread crumbs to track your way back if you get lost. Just kidding. But seriously, keep your phone fully charged so your map app can guide you back to safety.

Starting Point:

I start at Highridge Park, where you can find free available parking. Jog heading south, then make a left turn on Crest Rd, and there you will see an entrance to the McBride Trail. As you make your way down, it becomes the Filiorum Reserve, a 191-acre reserve with hills and canyons overlooking the ocean crossed by hiking and equestrian trails. This is part of the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve.

If you make a right, follow the path along residential backyards. Be mindful of the neighbors. You’ll be able to do a short jog until you reach the 180 degree ocean views of the coast. This area reminds me of Hawaii because you will see lush green trees below and the calming never-ending sea.

As you work your way back to the Filiorum Reserve entrance, another great trail is going down to Jack’s Hat Trail where it will take you to a roundabout and you will see a big tree in the middle. This is a nice place to take a break and enjoy a closer view of the scenic ocean.

Turn back again to your beginning point and you’ll hit Pony Trail. Cyclists, equestrians, and hikers are welcome on this route. You will also come across the Ford Trail on the right, however, cyclists are prohibited due to the dangerous incline. So if you’re looking to ride your bike, keep straight and take the recommended Pony Trail.

Zote’s Cutacross Trail is not too far away either. This path splits two ways. Either direction will bring you back in a loop. Cyclists are welcome here as well.

These trails are great for dogs big or small. Be on the look out for rattlesnakes and coyotes. I haven’t encountered any of them here yet, but it’s good to be aware and prepared.

I hope you enjoy this amazing adventure and let me know how it goes! Looking for another great hike in Rancho Palos Verdes? Try Alta Vincente Trail if you haven’t already.

  1. Omg I love this tip! Thank you so much for this. I’ve been trying to find new places to hike in SoCal and I haven’t been to this one yet. I’m going to set something up and go next weekend with some girlfriends. Thanks a lot!
