Studio Apartment Life Hack! How To Live Big With 400SQFT

After watching so many DIY home makeover and tiny living reality shows, I couldn’t help my curiosity. So I took the leap and challenged myself to live in a 440-square-foot studio. It’s been a little over a year, and so far I found more positives than negatives.

Cramped much? Surprisingly, not at all.

Thinking smart and making good use of my existing decor and furniture enables me to make my small studio apartment quite comfortable and spacious. All our needs are met because I’ve created a multi-functional home fit for a party of 2 and a dog & cat, (and an even larger one when friends come over for game night). So, here are some of my best tips to decorate a studio apartment so it works for you too.

STEP 1: BRAINSTORM

Choose your style: Mine is a cozy modern vintage style with four main colors: black, white, silver, and light wood accents.

Find your inspiration: I love taking old-looking furniture and flipping them into more contemporary pieces. Rehabbing is my jam. I don’t like to waste, so recycling and reusing things has always been a habit of mine.

Find your favorite element: What “wowed” you when you first set eyes on your place? Mine were the tall wide windows that faced the natural sunlight and trees. I knew this was “the” place when I could take a deep breath and feel the calmest I’ve ever been.

Point out the biggest challenge that you might face: Are you neat and tidy? With a smaller space, I’ve noticed that things can get messy quick even when I’m trying to practice minimalism. Consistent cleaning eventually becomes a regular routine. Organization and keeping clutter at bay is important. Clean place, clear mind.

Finding dust bunnies and cat fur from the previous owner… GROSS, but so satisfying.

Get ideas from friends: Your friends know what you can and cannot live without. My buddy, Devin, was a big help. He found a table outside of his apartment complex next to the dumpster. Someone’s trash was my treasure. It is still in tip-top condition and it goes great with my existing furniture. I sanded down and painted the top white and the legs black just like how you would see in the magazines. You could never tell it was used.

Don’t be embarrassed. Ask for help: Sometimes a DIY project may need some extra hands (especially if you’re short like me). I try not to rely on others because I want to be independent just like you! But when it comes to setting up an extra-long tension rod for a room divider, I did not have enough arm strength to hold it steady and tighten it securely myself. When I tried, it dropped on my head as I walked passed one night. Not good! Remember, safety first and ask for help if you need it.

Keep track of your proudest DIY: What is your favorite nook in the house that you are most proud of? Mine is the kitchen. It took me three full days to revamp an old drab-looking kitchen into a fabulous modern vintage one. Painting my cabinets to get the brightest coat took forever, BUT it was definitely worth it. Cherish your work of art. You deserve it!

Indulge in a piece that you love: Find an object that makes it the focal point of the room. What is the one thing that stands out for yours? Mine would be the motivational posters in my office corner. They remind me to face my fears and that I can make my dreams come true no matter the challenges.

My best piece of advice to you is… take your time: Don’t worry about filling up your studio right away. No need to rush it. When living in a small 440-square-foot studio, I’ve learned that things can get cluttered fast and you’ll most likely bring in new items overtime. Be picky and make wise decisions; then everything will come into place. Also, rearrange your furniture once in awhile. Learn how to ensure good luck by practicing feng shui in your home.

STEP 2: THE STUDIO TOUR

STUDIO KITCHEN – Watch my video tutorial here!

Black Countertop Contact Paper – Who says contact paper is just for lining your cabinets? Show it off by covering your entire countertop. Black is professional and sleek and easier to clean.

Backsplash Subway Tile – The horizontal rectangles provide the illusion of the wall being extended. It is easy to install because it is peel-and-stick. All you need is an exact-o knife to cut and measure. Cleaning is simple and this lightweight tile adds a beautiful design to the kitchen.

Sink Faucet – A sink faucet is one of the main focal points of a kitchen. The faucet that I have is one hole which typically fits single-handle faucets. I like that this stainless steel faucet has an adjustable sprayer attached at the nozzle for easy rinsing.

Brita Water Pitcher – Having this pitcher is quite convenient. You can put it in the fridge or leave it at room temperature. No need to go to the market to refill or install an expensive water filtration system. Replace the filters every few months and you’re good to go. It also comes in different colors to fit the rest of your decor.

Ceramic Succulent – If you want super low maintenance when it comes to plants, opt for these individual faux succulents. There’s something magical about the idea of nature residing inside your home.

Stockpot and Wok – I boil, steam, and stir fry A LOT when cooking at home. A stock pot and a wok are easy to use and food is ready to heat up in minutes.

Soap Dispenser – Mine came in a 2-pack, so I used one for dishwashing soap and the other for hand soap. One way to keep your decor looking clean and classy is to replace bottles that have product labels with clear glass dispensers.

Glass Jars – Glass jars are very versatile and can be used for all purposes. In this case, I’ve used large ones for my whole grain oatmeal, but you can store pasta, cereal, and other dry foods as well.

Money Tree – Am I superstitious? Not really. However, it doesn’t hurt having a money tree if you want to add some green to your decor as well as your wallet!

Round Mirror Place Mats – These also act as centerpieces on a table. They reflect light and showcase other angles of the room. The ceiling and side walls get a very cool effect and it tricks the eye into thinking the room feels more spacious.

Stools – If you’re looking for stools that don’t take away from your overall focus of the kitchen, I suggest finding skinny shaped chairs that compliment your counter and color scheme.

STUDIO BEDROOM

52 x 84 Inch Blackout White Curtains – These are a great way to divide the space while blocking out light and adding some texture to your studio. White curtains aren’t distracting and can easily blend with my wall. They are light-weight and can be tied up if needed.

Tension Rod – If you’re not able to drill into your ceiling, a tension rod that attaches to the side walls are a great way to hold up your curtains without damaging the interior. The rod that I have tightens as it twists and expands outward.

Canvas Board – Do it yourself and paint simple art that matches your decor! Or, if you have a friend (thanks Felix) that can sketch something out for you, even better!

Sofa Bed – A sofa bed is one of my favorite pieces that prove to be multi-functional and easy to install by yourself. Transform it into a couch when you have guests over or roll it down into a bed for two while using the wall as your headboard.

White Bamboo Bedsheets – These go with any modern theme. They are breathable, easy to wash, and perfect for sensitive skin. The threads are soft to the touch and go perfectly with any kind of bed.

White Pillows – You can’t go wrong with super comfy white pillows. The ones I have are very plushy and has great support for my head and back. The size and shape of these beautiful pillows make my bed look fuller just like in a catalog.

Gray Tweed Pillowcases and 18×18 Hypoallergenic Pillow Inserts – Add some character to your bed by covering your pillows with gray tweed pillowcases. Also, having hypoallergenic pillow cases are a must. Who wants to have a sneeze attack while sleeping?

Queen Comforter – My white queen comforter keeps me warm but is also very breathable during warm nights. This one adapts to my temperature nicely and has been very easy to wash.

STUDIO OFFICE 1

L-Shaped Computer Table – My desk was originally from Staples, but they no longer sell it. So here’s something similar that can help divide the room just as well and give you ample space for work.

Motivational Wall Posters – These posters aren’t too flashy and they compliment the home decor. If you want to remind yourself to stay motivated, these are great. They come with adhesive to attach to the back and they hold very well without ruining the wall.

Faux Succulents with Black Pots – If you’re like me who can barely keep a plant alive, these faux succulents are the next best option. They give off a sense of liveliness and warmth to your household without much effort.

Desk Pad – A large desk pad is trending nowadays. It allows more space for the mouse to roam around and it protects the overall table surface. I like that I can also roll it up and bring it to a coffee shop if I’m not working from home.

Wireless Keyboard and Mouse – Wireless is the way to go, especially when you have pets that like to damage wires. Plus, this keyboard and mouse has far better range via bluetooth connection and it prevents clutter.

Industrial Glass Lamp Shade with USB Ports – I got this particular lamp because it is multi-functional, dimmable, and easy to turn on and off with a tap of my finger. It’s pretty neat because it has 2 outlets and 2 USB ports on the lamp base for my devices.

Black Boss Office Chair – It’s important to find the right office chair that supports the lower back and overall posture. At the same time, I didn’t want a bulky chair for my L-shaped desk. Therefore, this black boss chair has been a perfect addition to my office.

STUDIO OFFICE 2

(Living Room Transformed into an Additional Office)

Dimmable LED Floor Lamp – You can’t get any more minimal than this LED floor lamp. I love that it adjusts to whichever direction you choose and it barely takes up any space. It can also change into 3 different shades.

Dining Table or Computer Desk – As mentioned before, I found mine next to the dumpster and repainted it, but here’s something similar. If you are expecting to have guests over, I recommend a rectangular table. It can fit at most 4-6 people. My boyfriend often uses this desk for work too.

Ergonomic Desk Chair – My boyfriend is particular about office chairs and needs one that prevents him from slouching. This one is affordable and supports the lower and upper back effectively.

Deco Coasters – Prevent water stains on your surfaces with these stylish coasters. I love the abstract modern lines on them. The bottom has cork at the base which dries super fast if there is a spill.

Floral Centerpiece – My aunt made mine as a housewarming gift, but here’s something similar. Give your office space some life with plants (fake or real). Your overall mood will thank you for it.

Donut Bed – Our Australian cattle dog and my foster kittens LOVE this bed. A donut-shaped pet bed offers a cozy and inviting space for your furry friend. Designed with comfort in mind, this special bed provides a unique snuggling experience for pets. The circular shape and plush padding create a sense of security, allowing your pet to curl up and feel safe. With its soft and luxurious materials, the bed offers a soothing touch that can help relieve anxiety and stress. Additionally, the removable and washable cover makes it easy to keep the bed clean and fresh. Treat your beloved pet to the ultimate relaxation with a donut bed and watch them enjoy countless hours of contented rest.

LIVING ROOM | YOGA WORKOUT STUDIO

Natural Fiber Rug – Cat approved. #ScratchingPost. This rug can help separate the space of your studio. Most of the time, a large rug is part of the living room or dining room area.

I use it for my yoga sessions and also a place where my pets can chill. Whether it’s in the center or in a corner, this natural fiber rug can compliment any modern space. Need to keep it in place? My favorite rug grippers can be found here.

LAUNDRY ROOM | CLOSET

Portable Garment Steamer – The easiest way to get wrinkles out fast is to use a portable garment steamer. Trust me, I’ve used both the tall steamer and the heavy iron, and from my experience, this portable one is my favorite and it saves so much space! I’m never going back. Watch my video:

This handy device is designed to be compact and lightweight, allowing you to easily carry it wherever you go. With just a few simple steps, you can transform crumpled fabrics into pristine garments that radiate freshness and sophistication. Its gentle yet effective steam penetrates the fibers of your clothes, smoothing out even the most stubborn wrinkles. Whether you’re at home or on the go, a portable garment steamer simplifies your life by providing a convenient and efficient solution for maintaining wrinkle-free attire.

BATHROOM

Cabana Stripe Bath Towels – Striped towels help elongate the size of the restroom making the space look and feel taller. Also, they are the perfect addition to any restroom, bringing a touch of timeless elegance and comfort. These luxurious towels effortlessly elevate the ambiance of your space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Crafted from high-quality materials, these towels are not only visually appealing but also incredibly soft and absorbent, providing a spa-like experience every time you use them. So wrap yourself in the plushness and indulge in the ultimate comfort and style, creating a haven of serenity within your own home.

Shaggy Bath Mat – Step onto the soft, plush surface of a shaggy bath mat, and instantly feel a sense of comfort and warmth envelop your feet. This delightful texture not only feels indulgent but also provides a gentle massage-like sensation as you walk. The longer pile of the shaggy fibers adds an extra layer of cushioning, making it a perfect option for those seeking a cozy and spa-like experience. Additionally, the wide range of colors and styles available allows you to find the perfect match for your bathroom decor, adding a touch of elegance and personality to the space.

Soap Dispenser – A glass soap dispenser is a delightful addition that adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any restroom. The sleek and transparent design creates a sense of openness and purity, instantly elevating the space. By incorporating a glass soap dispenser, you effortlessly elevate the overall ambiance of your restroom, turning it into a welcoming and serene haven where functionality meets aesthetic charm.

Stainless Steel Rainfall Shower Head with Handheld Combo – This square-shaped shower head feels like you’re under a waterfall. It’s such a relaxing feeling and I like how it comes with a handheld shower head for extended reach.

MINI STUDIO HALLWAY

8×10 Black Picture Frames – Black and white picture frames are popular in modern decor. You can’t go wrong with these art portraits. It is as if I am walking through a tiny museum. Use a black sharpie and draw anything you’d like and frame it!

Industrial Wall Sconce – With its robust and rugged design, this type of sconce adds a touch of vintage charm and industrial appeal to your interior decor. Its sturdy construction ensures durability, making it a long-lasting lighting solution. The focused light emitted by an industrial wall sconce creates a warm and cozy atmosphere, perfect for creating a welcoming ambiance in living rooms, bedrooms, or even hallways.

Studio hallway

Retro Light Bulb – A retro light bulb brings a touch of nostalgia and charm to any space, offering a unique set of benefits. The soft, warm glow emitted by a retro light bulb creates a cozy atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation or intimate gatherings. Additionally, retro light bulbs are energy-efficient and long-lasting, ensuring cost savings and minimal maintenance. Whether you’re aiming for a vintage-themed decor or simply want to add a touch of retro flair to your space, a retro light bulb serves as a delightful statement piece that brings both style and functionality to your lighting setup.

STEP 3: MORE TIPS TO ENLARGE YOUR STUDIO

  1. Divide the Space With Furniture – As you have seen in my pictures, every corner has a purpose. Though only 440 square feet, my home feels inviting and livable due to how I place my key furniture pieces. Curtain dividers, long rectangular tables, a narrow bed, and a rug will help promote this illusion. So depending on the layout of your studio, you can even place a sofa in the middle of the room to create a divider. Also, if you have a kitchen with a bar, add some stools underneath so it utilizes every inch of your square footage.
  2. Create Your Own Walls – Some studios have a corner area that can be easily hidden and made into a separate room. I was able to do that with a tension rod and tall curtains. Other ways to divide a space would be to add a tall large bookshelf where the bed ends. Not only does that provide extra storage, but it gives just as much privacy where you sleep. There are also room divider blocks and partitions that are easy to set up without damaging the interior.
  3. Separate the Space Using Color – Pick your color palette for every part of your studio. White will always enlarge a space no matter how big or small. However, it’s also smart to paint a portion of the wall a different color so it looks like a totally separate room. This is the same idea when you see flooring inside the house. Most of the time, your kitchen floors will not be the same texture or color as your living room. Muted earthy shades like tan, gray, and green are usually very calming to the eye. Select the colors that make you happy. Overall, they should be complimentary to one another.
  4. Build Upward – Maximize your space as much as you can by creating vertical storage spaces. Some studios have a loft as the bedroom, but others have high closet spaces like mine. Drill skateboard decks as extra shelving or hook your bike or surfboard onto the wall! So be sure to designate all parts of the room from top to bottom to save space.
  5. Organize Creatively – Stick to the essentials and only keep what you need. Throw away items that you barely use. It is the practice of maintaining an organized room that can be a good challenge. Store all the items where you can see them easily so you don’t forget that they are there. It helps to label storage boxes and color code them. Decorate your baskets to match the color scheme of your existing palette. Keep your aesthetic design along the way.
  6. Mirror, Mirror On the Wall – The more mirrors you have around your small studio, the bigger the space can look. Group mirrors together or stage a large vertical or horizontal one on the longest wall while keeping it symmetrical and uniform. Therefore, you will see double the space because of this illusion.

In conclusion, I hope this has given you some ideas to work with. Read more about how you can save space with a bookshelf while you’re at it!
