Glow Retreat: Power Your Day With Botanic Magic

The South Coast Botanic Garden, aka “The Jewel of the Peninsula”, does not disappoint. Nestled just a hop, skip, and a jump (okay, maybe a 10-mile drive) south of the Los Angeles Airport, this 87-acre paradise is like Mother Nature’s VIP section.

What To Expect

With 2,500 plant species showing off from Australia, the Mediterranean, and southern Africa, it’s like a botanical United Nations, minus the diplomacy. We’re talking rare trees and shrubs, the real celebrities of the plant world, making guest appearances you won’t catch anywhere else.

But wait, there’s more! Imagine strolling through The Dorothy and John Bohannon Rose Garden, feeling the vibes in the Living Wall, and admiring the Dorothy and Allen Lay Staghorn Fern Collection. You can get lost (in a good way) in the Garden for the Senses, experience the cool vibes of the Desert Garden, and chill with the Fuchsia Garden crew. And did I mention the Japanese Garden? It’s like a tranquil vacation without the jet lag.

Now, here’s the juicy part – the Garden’s in Sunset’s Zone 23, the VIP lounge for plants. It’s the equivalent of a green carpet event for flora. Over 200 bird species crash the party annually, making it the hottest spot for our feathered friends. It’s like the Met Gala, but for birds. If you’re a birdwatcher, consider this your invitation.

Munchies

Feeling peckish? Don’t worry, we’ve got Dottie’s, the Garden’s snack haven, and a picnic area near the Living Wall. It’s a buffet for both your eyes and your taste buds. And if you’re thinking of hosting an event, the Upper Meadow, Lower Meadow, and Frances Young Auditorium are up for grabs. It’s like having a garden party, minus the hassle of pruning.

Entry

To make things simple during your visit, you can order tickets online by clicking here. It’s open every day: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entrance allowed at 4:30 PM) for daytime events. It is only closed on Christmas Day.

When I arrived for the Glow event, it was a Friday night and I was able to secure my spot in person; however, there was a short wait. Evening entry usually begins at 5:30pm; but make sure to double check and call.

I enjoyed every bit of this adventure. If you’re into colorful lights, music, and just walking around seeing where an endless path takes you, this place is perfect.

Parking

And guess what? Parking is on the house. Yup, you read that right – free parking! Because nothing should stand between you and your date with nature. So, whether you’re a seasoned botanist or just looking for a cool hangout spot, the South Coast Botanic Garden is where the green magic happens. Come for the plants, stay for the vibes. See you in the garden! 🌿🌸
